Conditions and treatment
Skin folds:
A rash
called intertrigo develops when the skin rubs together in skin folds and
moisture from sweating is trapped inside.
Intertrigo (or intertriginous dermatitis) is
a rash that can develop in skin folds. This disease is common and may affect
people from infancy to adulthood. Certain factors increase your risk, such as
diabetes, being overweight, incontinence (inability to control your bladder or
bowels), wearing incontinence briefs, or bed rest. Sweating, heat and friction
can cause skin folds to become red and inflamed. Symptoms such as itching,
burning, odor and pain can be accompanied by redness. These symptoms can also
occur under medical devices such as braces or splints or near artificial limbs.
Common areas of intertrigo:
Intertrigo can
potentially develop in any skin fold or in areas where there is constant skin-to-skin
friction.
Other problems with skin folds:
In a person with incontinence,
moisture from urine and feces can get trapped in skin folds. Inflammation may
be found especially under the buttocks. The resulting condition is not
intertrigo, but a type of dermatitis that can cause similar problems. When the skin
or a skin fold is moist or damaged, it is highly susceptible to bacterial and
fungal infections.
How
to reduce risk:
For general prevention, patients' skin folds should be kept clean
and dry, friction should be reduced, and specialized cleansers and lotions with
antifungal effect should be used for these areas. It is also effective to wear
light, loose and absorbent clothes.
Taking care of your skin:
If intertrigo develops, follow these
recommended steps until the rash disappears.
Step 1: Wash the skin folds.
1. Clean gently using a mild detergent with a normal pH. You can
also use cleaning foams without rinsing.
2. Dry the skin gently.
Step 2:
Protect your skin.
1. Cut a suitable size of fabric. Allow 5 cm of fabric to be
outside the skin fold.
2. Place a layer of cloth under the skin fold or under a medical
device such as a brace or splint. The fabric should be placed at least 5 cm
outside the skin fold or brace/splint. This helps to remove excess moisture
from skin folds and evaporate.
3. Secure the textile in one of several ways: with pleat weights,
with a small amount of glue, or by attaching to the clothing.
4. Remove the textiles before showering and then place them again.
5. Replace the cloth within 5 days or if it becomes soiled with
urine or feces.
Patients
should check their skin every day. They should look for rashes, redness, or
open areas, and check all skin folds or areas of skin that are rubbed against
the skin by the equipment.
